Roast: Medium Review Date: September 2009
Origin: Boquete growing region, western Panama Price: NA

Blind Assessment: Blueberry-toned aroma with hints of cherry, flowers and baking spices. Bright, fruity acidity and a smooth mouthfeel with a complex fruit character in the cup bringing up associations ranging from plums and peaches to berries and citrus. Dry, sweet finish that becomes sweeter and slightly nutty in the long.

Notes: Elida Estate is an award winning coffee farm owned by the Lamastus family and located in Panama's famous Boquete growing region. This selection consists entirely of peaberries, a kind of bean that results when the coffee fruit develops only a single, oval bean rather than the usual pair of flat-sided beans. Peaberries produce a somewhat different (often better) cup than normal beans from the same crop, from which they may or may not be separated during grading. This coffee also is dry- or "natural-" processed, meaning the beans were dried inside the fruit rather than after the fruit is removed, as is the case with the more typical wet-processed or "washed" coffees. Geisha Coffee Roaster is a Florida based Internet retailer with a wide assortment of coffee from around the world. The company has deep family ties to coffee farms in Panama, including this one. (However, the company name should not be confused with the Geisha or Gesha coffee variety, a particularly costly, distinguished variety of arabica also associated with Panama.) Who Should Drink It: An unusual process, an unusual bean and an award winning farm.

Coffee, more so than wine, is a continually changing product. Recent reviews, whether written by Coffee Review or readers, are most likely to reflect current versions of a given coffee.
