Blind Assessment

Pungently sweet, buttery, complex. Richly layered berry-toned fruit, dark chocolate, vanilla, hazelnut in aroma and cup. Round, balanced acidity; deeply syrupy mouthfeel. Resonantly flavor-saturated finish. Our five cups were very slightly uneven, for which we deducted one point, but the general impact of this coffee was superb.

Notes

This coffee is a blend of coffees from trees of the Ateng, Bergendel and Onan Ganjeng varieties of Arabica. Opung BR is the name of a well-known woman coffee collector active in the Lintong growing region. “Opung” means grandmother, and “BR” is the name of her oldest son, a naming convention among the indigenous Batak people who produced this coffee. Coffees like this one from the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra are admired for their complex earth and fruit notes that appear to result largely from unorthodox fruit removal and drying practices called “wet hulling.” This is a particularly refined example of the type. Flight Coffee Co. (formerly CQ Coffee Roasters) is a coffee-loving, quality-focused roasting company based in Bedford, New Hampshire.Visit www.flightcoffeeco.com or call 603-836-6228 for more information.

Who Should Drink It

The pungent, berry-toned dark chocolate showed an almost Kenya-like intensity in this complexly original variation on the Sumatra cup.
