Blind Assessment: Sweetly tart and exhilaratingly complex. Richly tart fruit – guava, passion fruit – dominate, rounded by a cocoaish chocolate and lush night blooming flowers. Crisp, juicy acidity; light but very silky, lively mouthfeel. Resonantly flavor-saturated, slightly drying finish.
Notes: Produced mainly from trees of the admired, Bourbon-derived SL28 and SL34 varieties of Arabica. Grown by farmers of the Gitwe cooperative, which operates two wet mills, Karatu and Kariuga, and is composed of 1,868 farmer members. JBC Coffee Roasters (formerly Johnson Brothers Coffee Roasters) is a distinguished small-batch roasting company. Visit www.jbccoffeeroasters.com or call 608-256-5282 for more information.
Who Should Drink It: Classic Kenya: intense, elegant, complex.
