Blind Assessment
Earthy, original. Notes that combine the brighter notes of clay with richer suggestions of humus dominate aroma and cup, though discreetly and pleasingly, complicated by carob, oak, grapefruit, perhaps a hint of vanilla-like flowers. Backgrounded but gently vibrant acidity; lightly syrupy mouthfeel. The earthy sensation gives way to sweeter vanilla and carob suggestions in a gently drying finish.
Notes
Coffees from the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra like this one are admired for their complex fruit, herb and aromatic wood notes that result largely from unorthodox fruit removal and drying practices collectively called wet hulling or giling basah. JBC Coffee Roasters (formerly Johnson Brothers Coffee Roasters) is a distinguished small-batch roasting company. Visit www.jbccoffeeroasters.com or call 608-256-5282 for more information.
Who Should Drink It
Fine choice for lovers of the traditional earthy Sumatra cup who want an upgrade to a, well, elegantly earthy Sumatra cup.
