Guatamala Organic Fair Trade by Cafe Virtuoso Review |

  • Guatemala Organic Fair Trade

Roast: Medium Review Date: September 2013
Origin: El Quiche Department, south central Guatemala Price: $15.00/12 ounces

Blind Assessment: Deeply pungent. Apricot, cedar, nut, roasted cacao nib in aroma and cup. Round, richly bittersweet acidity; lightly syrupy mouthfeel. Apricot and chocolate in particular carry into a long, resonant finish.

Notes: From one of four coffee-producing communities of mainly indigenous farmers that make up the Ixil A’achimbal association. This coffee is fermented without water for around twenty hours in wooden boxes covered with banana leaves, washed, and sun-dried on tables and tarps, a local variation on orthodox wet-processing, and one that seems to have a complex and positive impact on cup character. Certified organically grown and Fair Trade certified, meaning it was purchased from small-holding farmers at a "fair" or economically sustainable price. Café Virtuoso is a small-batch coffee roaster that strives to procure, roast and deliver the best quality coffee in San Diego. Visit or call 619-550-1830 for more information.

Who Should Drink It: Those who enjoy depth and low-toned resonance in a small-producer, Fair-Trade-certified coffee.

Coffee, more so than wine, is a continually changing product. Recent reviews, whether written by Coffee Review or readers, are most likely to reflect current versions of a given coffee.
