Roast: Medium-Light Review Date: May 2013
Origin: El Quiche Department, south central Guatemala Price: $14.00/12 ounces

Blind Assessment: Evaluated as espresso. Ken (91) and his co-taster (91) recorded identical scores and very similar readings for this lively, balanced espresso: in aroma and flavor sweetly tart fruit (orange, lemon, kiwi) rounded by flowers for Ken and “sweet pea” for the co-taster; smooth, lightly syrupy mouthfeel; most impressively a very sweet finish with chocolate and cinnamon suggestions. Delicately chocolaty in three parts milk (“pure milk chocolate” according to the co-taster).

Notes: From trees of the heirloom Bourbon and the Caturra varieties of Arabica. Finca La Perla is set high in Guatemala’s western highlands, an area famous for the strength of its indigenous Mayan culture. La Perla has done well over the years in Cup of Excellence green coffee competitions, including winning a Presidential Award in 2006. Conduit Coffee is a small-batch artisan roaster based in Seattle, Washington focused on promoting connection for coffee lovers from farm to cup. Who Should Drink It: What we think of as the Guatemala character, with its balanced brightness complicated by chocolate and spice notes, is well represented in this espresso.
