Blind Assessment: Evaluated as espresso. Gently tart, lemony, delicate. Co-taster Sean Kohmescher (91) was a bit more lavish in his descriptors than Ken (91): “bright citrus” in the aroma; more sweet citrus, vanilla, hints of flowers and honey in the small cup; vanilla and cranberries in the finish. Ken pretty much left it at lemon and flowers. The lemon dominated in two parts milk, but the milk coaxed out a sweet chocolate to round and support it.

Notes: Grown by Jose Lizardo Rojas on his El Paraiso farm. An integral part of New York’s coffee renaissance, Brooklyn based Café Grumpy opened its first café in 2005 and has since expanded to four locations, including their own roasting facility. Who Should Drink It: An espresso for the new breed of straight espresso drinkers who value some of the same lighter-roasted brightness and honeyish complexity they find in drip-style coffees.

Coffee, more so than wine, is a continually changing product. Recent reviews, whether written by Coffee Review or readers, are most likely to reflect current versions of a given coffee.
