Blind Assessment: More ambivalence. Most panelists noted a pleasantly fruity, floral sweetness, particularly in the nose, but as the coffee cooled an underlying baggy flatness emerged to drown out the pleasant memories. "This coffee is like a bitter wind," wrote one. "Cools to grassy flavors." Two panelists complained that the roast was too light to do justice to the coffee. Perhaps that accounts for the grassy notes, but I don't think that the overall flatness can be attributed to roast.

Notes: Though not as admired as the best Kenyas in the March 1999 cupping, this African estate coffee displays a pleasantly fruity, floral sweetness, particularly in the nose. Originally reviewed by a panel as a green coffee. Family-owned estate and mill established in 1970 in the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe, near Mozambique.

Who Should Drink It:

Coffee, more so than wine, is a continually changing product. Recent reviews, whether written by Coffee Review or readers, are most likely to reflect current versions of a given coffee.
