Blind Assessment
Intense but flat, monotoned. Cherry cola, very lightly scorched fir, a hint of orange zest in aroma and cup. Sourish in structure, with a background sweetness. Lean though smooth mouthfeel. Cleanly simple finish, sweet-sour, with a hint of the cherry cola and scorchy fir notes.
Notes
This sample was purchased ground at a Safeway Market in Alameda, California, and cupped immediately after purchase. It is a blend of unspecified percentages of coffees of the Robusta and Arabica species. It carries both the USDA organic and Fair Trade seals. Judging from the bag copy and the company's website, Death Wish’s original “drink strong coffee” appeal has in part given way to the planet-and-people appeal of organic and Fair Trade certifications. Note that to bear the organic seal a coffee must be at least 95% certified organic, while only a minimum of 20% certified is required to carry the Fair Trade seal. Visit www.deathwishcoffee.com for more information.
Bottom Line
Little acidy brightness or roasty sharpness here, making for a smooth cup with a blunt intensity and, apparently, a lot of caffeine.
