Blind Assessment: Evaluated as espresso. Deep, resonant, savory-sweet. Black currant, dark chocolate, black sage, dusk-blooming flowers in aroma and small cup. Lightly syrupy, lively mouthfeel; black currant and sage carry into a drying but rich finish. The sweet-savory fruit and chocolate character blooms pleasingly in three parts milk.
Notes: Despite challenges ranging from unclear government coffee policy and urban encroachment on prime coffee lands to chronically unstable weather, the famed Kenya coffee auction system and its participating cooperatives continue to produce some of the world’s most elegant and distinctive coffees. AA is the highest grade of Kenya coffee based on bean size and fewest physical imperfections. In addition to his retail roasting operation, Aroma Roast Coffees, Simon Hsieh also operates Soaring Phoenix Trading, a business focused on purposed-built commercial espresso blends and high quality single-origin coffees. Who Should Drink It: Those who enjoy opulence in both coffee and life; a black velvet and red satin sort of espresso.
