Blind Assessment

Evaluated at proportions of 5 grams of instant coffee powder mixed with 8.5 ounces (250 ml) of hot water. Sweet, gently bright. Graham cracker, dark caramel, honey-roasted peanut, oak, rhododendron-like flowers in aroma and cup. Gentle, round, slightly bitter-salty in structure; plump in mouthfeel. Flavor fades in a quite dry and wood-toned finish.

Notes

This coffee tied for the third-highest rating in a tasting of “instant” or soluble coffees for Coffee Review’s September 2018 tasting report. The green coffee was produced by Juan Carlos Saborio Mesen from trees of the Caturra and Catuai varieties of Arabica and processed by the wet or washed method (fruit skin and pulp are removed before drying). This coffee was sourced and roasted by Coava Coffee in Portland, Oregon and solubilized and packaged as an instant by Voilá Coffee in Bend, Oregon. Coava is a Portland-based coffee roaster, now with a San Diego location as well, that aims to provide quality coffee and education regarding the preparation of good coffee.
