Blind Assessment
Simple, sweet-smoky. Scorchy caramel, date, tamarind, cantaloupe in aroma and cup. Very sweet in structure with a balancing brisk edge; plush mouthfeel. Flavor fades in the sweet-toned yet drying finish.
Notes
A blend of coffees of the Excelsa variety of the Liberica species from Philippines and Vietnam. Until 2006, Excelsa was believed to be a separate coffee species but is now considered a variety of Liberica, Coffea liberia var. dewevrei. Like Liberica, Excelsa is heat-tolerant and relatively disease-resistant. Most estimates suggest it makes up around 1% to 2% of world coffee production. Excelsa Coffee Company exclusively imports coffee of the Excelsa variety and sells it in both green and roasted formats. Visit excelsacoffee.com for more information.
Bottom Line
Coffee adventurers may want to try this coffee to test the hype around Excelsa. However, the roast is probably too dark here to fully convey the nuance of the variety’s natural sweetness, and judging from the look of the beans, the green coffee was not particularly well-sorted. Excelsa Coffee Company has persuasive plans for improving quality and distinction of its Excelsa production in coming seasons, however, so stand by.
