Roast: Medium Review Date: October 2009
Origin: Southern India. Price: NA

Blind Assessment: Smooth, rich, big-bodied, almost sugary sweet, with aromatic wood notes and a mild though distinct fruit ferment that hits raisin squarely and shades into dark chocolate. The sweetly rich finish grows very slightly tight in the long.

Notes: Monsooned Malabars are arabica coffees that, after drying inside the fruit and fruit removal, have been exposed to wet, salty winds inside special open-sided warehouses during the monsoon season. After several months of such exposure the beans swell to about twice their normal size, lose acidity, and develop a malty, musty character. Julian Coffee Roasters subtitles itself "Micro Roasted, Macro Taste," and expresses pride in its "Java for a cause" locally-focused charity and fund-raising program. Who Should Drink It: Those looking for a smooth, syrupy version of the rustically musty monsooned profile.

Coffee, more so than wine, is a continually changing product. Recent reviews, whether written by Coffee Review or readers, are most likely to reflect current versions of a given coffee.
