Roast: Medium Review Date: November 2013
Origin: Gedeo Zone, Yirgacheffe growing region, southern Ethiopia. Price: $21.50/16 ounces

Blind Assessment: Rich, sweet, intense. Brandy, mint, cherry, dark chocolate in aroma and cup. Round, balanced acidity; full, syrupy mouthfeel. Chocolate in particular persists in a sweet-toned finish.

Notes: This coffee is certified organically grown and Fair Trade certified, meaning it was purchased from small-holding farmers at a "fair" or economically sustainable price. It is a dry-processed or "natural" coffee, meaning the beans were dried inside the fruit rather than after the fruit has been removed, as is the case with wet-processed or "washed" coffees. Worka is one of twenty-three primary cooperatives located in the Gedeo Zone of Southern Ethiopia that are organized as the Yirgacheffe Farmers Union. Yo el Rey Roasting is a retail coffee shop with an in-house roaster located in California's Napa Valley. Yo el Rey ("I the King"?) roasts only organic and Fair Trade certified coffees. Who Should Drink It: An outstanding version of the more brandy-like style of dried-in-the-fruit Ethiopia coffees. The fermented notes are sweet, graceful and cleanly expressed.

Coffee, more so than wine, is a continually changing product. Recent reviews, whether written by Coffee Review or readers, are most likely to reflect current versions of a given coffee.
