Roast: Medium-Light Review Date: November 2013
Origin: Yirgacheffe growing region, southern Ethiopia. Price: HK $200/500 grams

Blind Assessment: Chocolaty and spicy. Roasted cacao nib, fresh-cut cedar, flowers, a hint of paprika-like spice in aroma and cup. Richly balanced acidity; lightly syrupy mouthfeel. The chocolate-related notes carry deeply into a sweet, gently drying finish.

Notes: Yirgacheffe is a coffee region in southern Ethiopia that produces distinctive coffees from traditional varieties of Arabica long grown in the region. A “natural” or dry-processed coffee, meaning the beans were dried inside the fruit, encouraging a flavor profile that is lower-toned and more pungent than the more familiar wet-processed floral- and citrus-toned Yirgacheffe profile. Like virtually all Ethiopia coffees, this coffee is produced by villagers on small, garden plots interplanted with food and other subsistence crops. Barista HK is comprehensive specialty coffee business in Hong Kong that operates cafés, provides training, and produces a wide variety of products including coffees like this one. Who Should Drink It: Clean but unusual profile for coffee adventurers.

Coffee, more so than wine, is a continually changing product. Recent reviews, whether written by Coffee Review or readers, are most likely to reflect current versions of a given coffee.
