Coffee Review - Ethiopia Gedeo by Coffea Roasterie
  • Coffea Roasterie

    Sioux Falls, South Dakota
  • Ethiopia Gedeo Natural Process

Roast: Medium Review Date: December 2011
Origin: Gedeo Zone, southern Ethiopia. Price: $18.00/12 ounces

Blind Assessment: Lushly sweet and honeyish but very complex across a range of sensation. On the sweet side, plum, blueberry and citrus flower; on the pungent, pine and tart lemon. A minty, brandyish dark chocolate fills in the middle. Balanced, juicy acidity; syrupy yet lively mouthfeel. Simplifies just a bit in the finish, though a chocolaty sweetness manages to soften a lean toward drying astringency in the long.

Notes: This is a dry-processed or "natural" coffee, meaning the beans were dried inside the fruit rather than after the fruit has been removed, as is the case with the wet-processed or "washed" coffees more typical of southern Ethiopia. This coffee consists entirely of local heirloom varieties of Arabica. Coffea Roasterie is a South Dakota-based wholesale and retail roaster, offering a small but refined selection of mostly single-origin coffees. Visit or call 605-362-9955 for more information.

Who Should Drink It: Overall complexity and balance could make this selection an interesting starter dried-in-the-fruit coffee for purists who are tempted to stray from their clean and classic wet-processed habits.

Coffee, more so than wine, is a continually changing product. Recent reviews, whether written by Coffee Review or readers, are most likely to reflect current versions of a given coffee.
