Blind Assessment: Evaluated as espresso. Complex dried-in-the-fruit profile. “Berries and more berries” in the aroma for co-taster Sean Kohmescher (91). For Ken (91) berries plus a lot of other notes: brandy, malty dark chocolate, fresh-cut cedar. In the small cup Sean felt the aromatics turned crisper and drier: lemon, flowers, green bitters (as in asparagus); Ken read the same rounder, brandyish, cedary berries-and-chocolate notes as he had in the aroma. Both found the body medium and the mouthfeel silky. Rather crisp in two parts milk; cocoa for Ken, lemon and flowers for Sean. Notes: Grown and processed near Nekempte, Ethiopia, especially for Novo, in forest-like conditions at altitudes of approximately 7,000 feet. This is a dry-processed or "natural" coffee, meaning the beans were dried inside the fruit rather than after the fruit has been removed, as is the case with wet-processed or "washed" coffees. Founded by Herb, Joseph and Jake Brodsky in 2002, Novo Coffee is a quality-oriented boutique roasting company with fine coffee, an elegant package, and the slogan "Get Closer" – to coffee, as it turns out. Visit www.novocoffee.com or call 303-295-7678 for more information. Who Should Drink It: Expresses the berry-and-brandy character of fine dried-in-the-fruit natural coffees with clean, intriguing range and complexity. |
