  • Panama La Esmeralda Especial Mario San Jose

Roast: Medium Review Date: August 2010
Origin: Boquete growing region, western Panama Price: $28.00/8 oz.

Blind Assessment: In the aroma lemon, berry, and above all, delicate flowers - jasmine and lavender. In the cup crisp, floral-toned acidity, silky mouthfeel. The flowers and lemon deepen and turn richly pungent, sustaining into a long, deep finish.

Notes: Coffees from trees of the botanical variety "Gesha" or "Geisha" grown on farmer Price Peterson's Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama have consistently attracted record-breaking prices over the past several years. With its long, boat-shaped beans and distinctive floral and chocolate cup, the Esmeralda Panama Gesha continues as one of the world's most unique coffees. "Mario" refers to the area of the farm where this particular lot was grown, and "San Jose" the time of year when it was harvested, in this case during the month of March when regionally popular patron saint, San Jose has his feast day. Based in the San Diego area, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is a retailer and wholesaler that focuses on high-quality organic and socially responsible coffees. Who Should Drink It: A particularly complex floral-toned version of one of the world's great coffees.

Coffee, more so than wine, is a continually changing product. Recent reviews, whether written by Coffee Review or readers, are most likely to reflect current versions of a given coffee.
