Blind Assessment: Rich, pungent aroma with hints of berry, black currant, aromatic wood and flowers. In the cup flavor builds in intensity; delicate notes of orange and flowers give way to sweeter berry-toned fruit and brandyish dark chocolate as the cup cools. The deeper notes linger in the mildly dry finish. Notes: Only about one hundred pounds of this rare coffee was available for sale at the time of review. This is a peaberry grade separated from the first place winner of the 2009 Bolivia Cup of Excellence competition, which as a green (unroasted) coffee attracting a score of 93.36 from an international jury. Peaberries are a kind of bean that results when the coffee fruit develops only a single, oval bean rather than the usual pair of flat-sided beans. Peaberries produce a somewhat different cup than normal beans from the same crop, from which they may be separated during grading, as they were here.
